USeP in Partnership with DepEd: Strengthening Inclusive Education in Mindanao

The continuing partnership of the University of Southeastern Philippines (USeP) with the Department of Education (DepEd) has brought into fruition the convention of 37 administrators, from different regions in Mindanao, in a three-day Orientation Seminar for Administrators on Inclusive Education, July this year, at the College of Education, USeP, Obrero Campus. The event is an upshot of the 2012 Capability Building for SPED Teachers where USEP through its Teacher Training Center worked jointly with DepEd-Bureau of Elementary Education in training teachers of children with special educational needs.

The role of administrators is significant to the effective implementation of inclusive education- providing equal access and quality education to students with special educational needs; hence, the aim to provide administrators basic information in providing effective educational programs to learners with special needs and guide their practice of establishing collaboration with other stakeholders.

The seminar included an array of activities which provided participants meaningful learning experiences. They listened to talks about theories, practices, issues and researches encompassing inclusive education and participated in discussions; went on a field trip, at Tugbok Elementary School and Bangoy Elementary School Sped Centers, to observe and engage in dialogue with SpEd Center administrators; and designed school improvement plans integrating SpEd program and activities. These activities were assessed by participants as informative and relevant. In fact, they expressed interest for more exposure to activities pertaining to management of Sped Centers.

This event was supervised and coordinated by Dr. Edna H. Jalotjot, Director of the Teacher Training of the College of Education and Ms. Mariche C. Llanto, BEED-SpEd Coordinator. The students of the BEED-SpEd program of the College of Education enjoined their participation by ushering participants on the first day and assisting the staff of the Special Projects. Facilitators and resource speakers, who shared their expertise are in the persons of Ms. Adora P. Zerrudo, Instructor-SPED, Mr. Romeo Mina, Senior Education Specialist II- DepEd Central Office; Dr. Minerva T. Fabros, Chief, BEE DepEd RO-XI; and Ms. Conchita Guinita, Sped Coordinator, DepEd-Davao del Sur.
